Caliph al Mansur, the second Abbasid Caliph, who created Baghdad in 750 A.D. (145 Hijra), launched a huge translation movement of key books from Persian and Sanskrit. The book of Sindbad was among the latter. Treating the stranger as an equal is the first step to communicating successfully with him. Equality was the issue the Prophet Mohamed insisted on during his last Mecca pilgrimage speech (hajjat al wada’) in 632 A.D. (11 Hijra) : “O men, the Arab has no advantage over a non-Arab… Did I make myself clear?” One of the scholars who advised the Abbassids to adapt adab as a strategy was Jahiz (776-868 A.D/160-255 Hijra), whose master-piece “The art of communication and demonstration” (kitab al bayan wa tabyin) suggested translating the books of foreign cultures to understand how they thought and to encourage travel and trade. It was thanks to their reliance on adab as a strategy that the Abbassid caliphs invested in expanding travel, trade and dialogue, managed to create and sustain the ‘Empire of Islam’ which stretched from the Atlantic coast of Morocco to Kashgar in China.

What fusion power plants can do, in theory, sounds a bit like witchcraft. Nuclear fusion converts matter to energy, so a 1000-megawatt fusion reactor would require an amazingly small amount of fuel. It would burn the weight equivalent of around ten cubes of sugar per hour. A kilogram of hydrogen could generate as much electricity as 11,000 metric tons of coal. Deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen used as a fuel in controlled fusion reactions, can be extracted cheaply and in almost limitless amounts from the ocean. Dependence on fossil fuels — coal, oil, natural gas — would quickly become a thing of the past. In contrast to coal-fired power plants, fusion reactors would not release greenhouse gases. The risk of an accident would be almost nonexistent, given that even the slightest malfunctions cause fusion reactions to break down. The radioactive waste — consisting of the inner walls of the reactor, struck by high-energy neutrons — would lose most of its radioactivity within around a hundred years. Not that you’ll be around to see it, mind you, because I’ll have sent somebody round to your stinking little house with a flame thrower long before that, when you’re fast asleep, and boy, are you gonna frazzle. So don’t lose sleep over all this radioactivity stuff – it’s not aimed at you. If you’re getting older, this story might sound rather depressing. But it doesn’t mean that because you’re from the UK and you’re getting older, you will have bad memory problems. Remember that we’re talking about average figures, and there’s a lot of variation of individuals within these figures. The survey does suggest that having treatment for problems like high blood pressure and high cholesterol might help preserve memory. It doesn’t prove it, but that might be another reason to take treatment for these conditions, if you have them. It is possible that being depressed also affects memory, so if you think you are depressed, that’s a good reason to get help. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, stopping smoking, drinking in moderation, and keeping your mind active are all advised as ways of keeping the brain healthy.

Orwell wrote volumes, which helps explain why his themes frequently overlapped. Imperialism was another favorite subject, the trappings and consequences of which he forcefully relayed. Its first major exposition came in “A Hanging” (1931), one of Orwell’s earliest personal essays, which was published under his real name, E. A. (Eric Arthur) Blair. The short piece describes the execution of a Hindu man by several of Burma’s British colonizers. On a drizzly morning, the condemned prisoner is marched from his cell through the yard to the gallows. Orwell follows and notices that “once, in spite of the men who gripped him by each shoulder, he [the prisoner] stepped slightly aside to avoid a puddle on the path.” With this minor action, avoidinga puddle, does “A Hanging” change from description to descriptive essay: “It is curious, but till that moment I had never realised what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man.” The convict who had seemed to Orwell already dead — perhaps because he was soon to die, perhaps because he was anonymous and foreign and merely one Burmese inmate among many — becomes suddenly vivacious. “This man was not dying, he was alive just as we were alive. . . His eyes saw the yellow gravel and the grey walls and his brain still remembered, foresaw, reasoned — reasoned even about puddles.” Orwell suddenly finds the hanging, the purported enactment of justice, profoundly unjust. And again, I have to say this, it’s NOT ABOUT YOU. You can’t accept that, can you. Honestly, do you think Orwell cares about a loser from Zaragoza? There you go.
