Magnificent Obsession – an introduction

Few films can have greater names.

I am a sucker for this film (Douglas Sirk, 1954) no matter how often I’m told that the story is absolutely preposterous. It only just verges on feasible (i.e. credible) thanks to an outstanding performance by Rock Hudson. (One day, people will give Rock his due as the Greatest Actor of All Time. Until then, people will carry on thinking of him as a bit of a joke and snigger about him, but his vindication will come sooner or later.)

“Magnificent Obsession” is a title that film makers wouldn’t use nowadays. It sounds too extravagant and cheesy. It almost works as the title of a Japanese soft porn film – they specialise in the most ludicrous titles (“Reverse Soap Heaven”, anybody?) and it also has a disturbing sort of reborn Christian ring to it.

I think I can safely say I don’t have any obsessions, magnificent or otherwise. The oxymoronic quality of the two words in the title practically cancel each other out – if it’s magnificent, it can’t be an obsession and if it’s an obsession, how can it be magnificent? It only makes sense in the film. It doesn’t work in real life. Unless…

If I have something I’m quite interested in, without it being an obsession, something I can’t say I’m single-minded about but which occupies my attention when I’m involved in it, and then I blow it up to “Full Screen View”, what have I got?

I mean, “blowing it up” = “magnifying” = “magnificent”… are you with me?

Right. That’s the title sorted out. Now, the thing is, I’ve got loads of photos lying around that I’ve taken here, there and everywhere, and I’ve been thinking I could upload some of them on this blog. They would have nothing to do with the rest of the posts Sheen and I stick here, so I would have to put them in a different place. Hmmmm.

Should I say something about each photo, say where it is, what kind of camera I used, when I took it, etc.? Or just give it a title and let people come to their own conclusions? I think I’ll start with my plan B.

Here’s a taster. It’s called “Green Mountain”. From now on, these photos will appear on the “Magnificent Obsession” page.
